A goldsmith in Stockholm was relocating the business to new premises and needed help moving a safe weighing roughly 600 kg. The safe was bolted to the floor and had to be detached, transported and installed in the new shop.

Because of the sensitive retail environment and the weight of the safe, the job called for careful planning, the right equipment and a safe working method to keep the risks to a minimum.

The challenge

Moving a safe of 600 kg involves far more than transporting a heavy object. The safe was bolted to the floor and had to pass through narrow spaces where floors, walls and doorways were all at risk of damage.

Ahead of the job we therefore carried out a site survey, assessing the passages, examining the floor surface and planning which resources and equipment would be needed to complete the move safely.

Once the move began we reassessed the situation on site and chose to change the planned route. The original passage was judged to carry an unnecessarily high risk of damage to the premises should anything unexpected happen.

The solution

We detached the safe by releasing its fixing in the floor and used specialist equipment to move it under control.

Floor protection boards were laid along the route, and we built a purpose-made ramp so that the safe could be moved safely between different levels.

After transport the safe was installed in the new premises and bolted to the floor according to the wishes of the customer.

Careful planning, continuous risk assessment and the right equipment meant that the whole move could be carried out safely and under control.

The result

The safe was moved and installed without damage either to the safe itself or to the two shop premises.

By adapting the working method to the conditions on site we were able to minimise the risks and make sure the customer could quickly resume trading in the new premises.

The job shows how much experience, planning and flexibility matter when heavy and valuable objects are moved in sensitive environments.
